Demystifying Critical Race Theory: What's the fear all about?
There is no debate raging around Critical Race Theory (CRT). The sound-making you hear around CRT is one side’s lack of acknowledgement of systemic oppression. The issue at hand is not whether one agrees with CRT, but whether one recognizes the endemic nature of racism that prevails in the country. The truth is, a few months back no one knew what CRT was, and the greater truth is that several months later only a few more people know what CRT is. It only took the careless misuse of the term to unleash a rhetorical warfare on this academic framework, as people who had no expertise or basic knowledge of CRT took a vehement stance against it. This exposition on CRT walks us through the historical development of CRT, it’s subsets and analyzes where fear lies. Participants have the opportunity to learn about CRT and see what implications it has in their classrooms. The presenter is a Critical Race Theory scholar with a forthcoming book on Critical Storytelling.

What if every teacher worked skillfully with English Learners?
ExcEL provides personalized, collaborative, purposeful professional learning for ALL educators working with English Learners, using a micro-credential approach to provide recognition for learning through job-embedded, portfolio-based experiences. Twelve discrete micro-credentials (competencies) are organized into two tiers. The first six are recommended for all teachers, the second six are recommended for teachers who choose to become ESL/TESOL specialists. This approach provides a pathway for teacher career advancement. We believe every teacher wants, and needs, the skills needed to ensure English Learners are successful in their classrooms. Session participants will have the opportunity to hear from administrators, teachers, and students who are involved with the ExcEL program. Biology teacher Diana Siliezar-Shields (Barrington High School) and ESL Teacher Andrea Mercado (McMahon Elementary School) will discuss their experiences as ExcEL site facilitators as well as their own professional learning journeys with ExcEL and micro-credentials. Moving a school from the inside out
Choosing Love. Love just may be the closest we get to magic. The Wizards of West Warwick High School invite you to share our journey to Choosing Love from the eyes of students, teachers, and administrators. WWHS has experienced an evolution of fusing trauma-informed practices, the practice of self-care for its staff, and the need for social-emotional learning within our school’s classroom and school culture. The West Warwick team will share its story of evolution from one small self-contained classroom, to an annual special education student empowerment event, to a culture and community of `Choosing Love’. Our school's commitment to trauma-informed practices and self-care quickly evolved with the adoption of the “Jesse Lewis Choose Love” movement. We have adopted NEASC’s 2019 Elliot Award Winner, Scarlet Lewis’ curriculum and methodology into our school building in a way that has transformed our teaching, learning, and student connections like never before. What if student voice informed relationships and sex education lessons?
Students recently responded to a nationwide survey in the UK on the quality of their relationships and sex education (RSE) lessons. Not only was their verdict damning, but it has important implications for how RSE could be better internationally. The UK's school inspectors now require schools to show evidence that student voice has been incorporated into the planning and teaching of RSE, and the results are beginning to bear fruit. Moving beyond “Living it” means more than revamping the curriculum. It means transforming the curriculum’s purpose – and therefore its effectiveness. Join us and hear from students in Middle and High School at the UK’s largest international school group about what students want, need and expect from this important subject (mandatory in the UK since 2020). View evidence of student voice-informed planning, and take away curriculum materials that outline the scope and sequence the best practitioners of RSE recommend.

Limber learning: Using time and space more effectively
Flexible time and space for learning is easier said than done. The confines of herding large student and staff groupings through learning routines in safe and predictable patterns supremely challenges any school. At the International School of Helsinki, we learned from our experiences quickly developing COVID-shaped learning schedules to develop a more flexible weekly learning plan that prioritizes both frequent interaction and regular chunks of learning opportunity. At the same time, we continued to renovate our urban building to prioritize spaces that we feel positively impact learning. This workshop shares how we developed this master schedule and renovated learning spaces to reflect our school’s catalysts for learning: wellbeing, autonomy, belonging, and connected learning. We’ll share our in-the-moment findings from living with these new routines and structures. Our goal is for participants to leave this workshop with creative solutions for how time and space can improve learning opportunities in schools.

Recognizing alternative diploma pathways of the future
The pandemic, along with dramatic manifestations of climate change and systemic societal inequities, have all laid bare maladaptive educational systems the world over. While challenging for many, the myriad revelations of this unique time in human history create opportunities for long-overdue innovation in our schools. Killing Time: Modeling creative collaboration in musical theater
COVID protocols inspired us to reconsider our spring musical. Needing a show that could pivot with weekly developments, we created our own book and songs, and committed all our resources maximize the student experience. We were able to create a true ensemble show, with no gender/ethnic/racial/body-type identity markers in the character parts; anyone could play any role. As students watched us improvise, revise, adapt, and transcend obstacles, they saw a real-life, real-time model of what collaborative creativity can look like. What if this were not only a happy one-time outcome, but an actual curricular goal of our school program?

Beyond academics: Developing the skills that matter
What skills are integral to reaching independence and success once one emerges from the school environment into adulthood? A strong set of social emotional skills are the skills that matter. Individuals with learning disabilities present with unique needs, impacting the progression of these skills and success outcomes. Collaboration amongst our research team and our campus leadership and faculty has allowed us to interpret the information gathered from our ongoing Lives Over Time research to inform our understanding of what our students need most and apply it to our current classrooms in an explicit and meaningful way, promoting success and independence. Conference participants will have the opportunity to learn about the unique needs of students with specific learning disabilities with regard to social emotional learning along with specific, applicable methods aimed at facilitating the development of these integral social emotional skills when working with students with learning disabilities.

Charting the course to graduation: Navigation for all students
The Falmouth Public Schools (MA) reflected on how the Clipper voyage has led us through years of growth punctuated by countless examples of achievement, persistence, and success to create the portrait of a graduate, Charting the Course to Graduation. During this session, our team will highlight how to balance history and traditions as you simultaneously welcome innovation. We will share how we use the pandemic as an accelerant to our efforts to reimagine vision of teaching and learning to prepare students to face their own unknown. As we share our journey with colleagues, we will elevate current practices and stimulate new thinking. We will help springboard ideas for how students and teachers both navigate the way forward together as learners -- using the portrait of a graduate as a framework. We will unpack key language sourced from instructional practices, the process for identifying core skills and creating our skills descriptors, how to build momentum, and ways to include entire school districts and stakeholders in the process of designing a portrait of a graduate.

Student agency in phenomenon based learning
Project based learning is part of the core pedagogical principles in school across the globe. What if we started the design process with student agency and ownership at the focal point? Phenomenon based learning is multi-disciplinary and stresses the importance of student involvement in the design process. By definition students need to be involved in designing the contents, the learning process and the assessment at the age appropriate level. During phenomenon based learning projects the class acts as a learning community trying to gain deeper understanding of different types of phenomena that are relevant and current to the students' experiential world. In this session participants will learn useful strategies for designing skill based and process orientated learning processes that promote student agency, effective skill acquisition and equity among students, and of course engage in thought provoking conversation with other participants.

What if we give students time for what they need?
This session will include testimonials (videos and/or written) from teachers, students, parents, counselors, and administrators about the benefits (targeted intervention, social-emotional) of What I Need Time or WIN Time. We will look at WIN Time through these different stakeholder lenses and discuss why, in virtual learning, we added WIN Time to the schedule, and how we went about planning and implementing the program. We will use JamBoards (other platforms TBD) and breakout rooms after the presentation to further generate ideas from participants about whether or not they have something similar to WIN Time built into their students' schedules. Why and why not? Then in groups, we will draft a proposal for WIN Time.

Mastering experiences: Gamified education and learning design
This session explores the theoretical foundations of the gamified educational methodologies (Karl Kapp, Maria Montessori, Celestin Freinet) and the practical application of them in the creation of programs and materials for students. We will study the new technological perspectives on education, proving that students could feel more engaged and motivated as they are actively learning through this approach. Gamification doesn’t only mean to have games within the lessons, but to include skills such as competitiveness, patience, progression and consistency on a daily basis plan, which benefits teachers and students as a whole. Learning is a constant need that remains natural in spite of the different stages of our lives. Therefore, we want to make these experiences more significant and long lasting for everyone by creating dynamic and interactive materials, especially e-learnings and tools with accessible technology, which proves the importance of design application and UX research for a better education.

Global mindedness and intercultural competencies: Gimmick or necessary growth?
This session will give a brief overview of the intentional school system and its changing understanding of its role within society both locally and globally. I then proceed to unpack two core discourses within this framework: global-mindedness and intercultural understanding. Finally, I argue that although often conflated, both terms require different but mutually supportive focus in a 21st century, globally-connected learning environment. This presentation will provide a space and a framework from which participants can engage with these terms. The goal is for participants to walk away with a viable framework from which they can begin enacting change and growth at a local level.

What if education was uncensored? Too often educators are stranded on islands of learning outcomes and unable to incorporate current real life connections that are deemed sensitive. Education is a quagmire of censorship, but what if it wasn't? Everyone has a few topics they cringe from bringing up in the classroom, yet these topics are hugely impactful to student life beyond school. In this session, participants will broach their local issues, define their comfort zones, and learn how to guide discussions promoting free speech without hate speech. Participants will use polls, breakout rooms and a planner to take away an understanding of how to adapt lessons to respond to global issues as quickly as they arise.

Mindfulness activities and classroom strategies to improve metacognitive intelligence
Participants will be aware of the importance of developing students’ metacognition. Participants will learn some basic classroom yoga routines to enhance student's ability to connect with themselves and reflect meaningfully. They will engage in a dialog in breakout rooms and practice in small groups and share their feelings with the larger group. The presenter will share some reflective strategies of facilitating metacognitive teaching and learning practices in classrooms including some metacognitive prompts to help students reflect better on their own learning process. Participants will be aware of some good reading strategies that develop metacognition. Participants will reflect on the session’s objective and reflect on the day’s learning experience by using a padlet.

We will look at resilience: What is resilience, why is it so important to lead a positive life, and how can seven resilience traits build resilience in our students? We will focus on the role of learning goals and learning perspectives in the classroom. How setting learning goals can help learners demonstrate understanding, competencies, knowledge, dispositions, and values that will allow them to become responsible and successful citizens. What happens when you turn teacher-centered classrooms into student-owned, flexible learning spaces? Participants will take a virtual tour to see a transformation from a corridor and group of classrooms to purposeful learning centers for mini-lessons, collaboration, and reflection. We will demonstrate how we encourage students' agency by giving them the tools necessary to choose their own space and manage their own learning. What if we promote the internal learning environment of the child?
One child commented that it was, “Better at school, better at home, better everywhere!”

A child’s internal physical environment defines their wellness and cognitive development. The central nervous system affects how people are able to interact with their physical environment and also the people that surround them. When there is a learning problem the resolution is physical. So, why not proactively develop the physical learning systems first so that there are less problems?

The Access to Well-Being and Learning programme measures a leaner's physicality. It then applies simple personalised designs through the STEP method to improve a student’s internal learning environment. Teachers and parents are asked to consider the learner differently and to become aware of what is happening inside the learner. Learners become better able to access the learning environment around them and lives change.

Join the session and learn something about your own physicality.

We will consider the science of how the cerebellum, cerebrum, amygdala, vestibular and proprioceptive systems work to give you some insight as to how children can better access the learning environment you provide.

Supporting New Schools Through the ACE Protocol and Early Partnership
Launching a new school is challenging.  The traditional approach looks something like: a few people hatch a plan, perhaps intending to replicate an existing school, agreements are made, finances secured, a few people plan for the launch of the school, teachers and leaders are hired, students recruited, and school is in session...  After a period of time (through an accreditation process or otherwise), the community realizes the well-intended plan wasn’t a fit for their students and is not owned by faculty or understood by parents.

What if a school could spend their 5 year anniversary celebrating their shared and collective identity instead of working to address the things they wish they would have done differently?

Building community, enhancing capacity: A model for DEI planning and implementation
What resources and leadership are necessary to create an inclusive and equitable school community? What policies and practices help to uphold the health, safety and dignity of each person? How can we make sure that our community includes a vital diversity of identities, voices and perspectives? How can we ensure that all members of the community are culturally competent? How can we help all people feel valued and have equitable opportunity to contribute and thrive? What systems will allow us to track data, evaluate programs and communicate progress effectively? These are some of the questions that drove a yearlong DEI planning process at Moses Brown School in Providence, RI. In this workshop, Head of School Matt Glendinning and Luke Anderson, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, will describe MB’s approach to engaging its community in thinking strategically about DEI, devising action steps that are concrete and measurable, and establishing priorities and timelines for successfully launching the plan.

Leading Together: Students Co-Facilitating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Work
What if students were leaders in making diversity, equity and inclusion a priority for the school community? We will engage with three student representatives of PSI’s DEI committee as they share details about their leadership roles and accomplishments. They have co-facilitated focus groups, led the process of developing our first official Diversity Statement, advised on the content of our first school-wide equity and inclusion audit, and participated in professional development with external consultants along with faculty and staff. They will share their personal reasons for getting involved in this work, what their next steps will be, and how they hope to inspire more student leaders. In breakout rooms, small groups will process and discuss the student presentations and brainstorm ways in which their schools could reimagine student leadership. We have three workbooks we designed and published in our district which serve as SEL guides for administrators, educators, and students. We will model our SEL activities in breakout groups, using NearPod to engage the audience. The topic of our presentation will be about using CARE strategies in faculty meetings, informal and formal meetings, the classroom, and during professional development. We provide researched-based strategies and share out what has been successful in our district, which is made up of seventeen technical high schools across the State of Connecticut. The audience will question their own practices and evaluate their effectiveness as well as ask themselves the "what if" question such as "what if every school truly C.A.R.E.S.?"

Personal interest projects to (re)engage students to love learning
A Personal Interest Project (PIP) is a hands-on project where students are challenged to Learn, Solve, Make or Do something of their own design and choosing. Participants will view the activities and innovative Launchpad platform that guides students through a self-paced, student driven PIP that can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to complete. Participants will try activities to develop their own PIP topics and see examples of PIPs from middle and high school students. Participants will learn how they can bring PIP into any classroom or advisory and how schools and teachers have used PIP to engage students in remote, hybrid or in person learning and how students are able to demonstrate the school’s Vision of the Graduate by completing a project. Student agency through the Brain Foods Project
The Brain Foods Project, was born when a group of students, in their first year of the Middle Years Program (6th grade), did a group project to study how certain foods affect the brain. In the last three years, their heartfelt and sincere commitment has led to the creation of a webpage, a cooking book, an interview with a famous chef, and the list goes on. But most importantly, it is not coming to an end. During the session, participants will be able to interact with the speakers through an online mind map (Popplet) in which they can write their, questions and thought on the project. Re/Think: What cognitive science tells us about post-pandemic leadership
This session provides an opportunity for education leaders to apply new research in cognitive science to overcome default thinking coming out of crisis and use a framework of disciplined thinking to lead transformational change. Rather than revert to old norms with time and space limitations, what if leaders prepare by focusing attention on key elements that maximize their ability to inspire and empower others in learning to lead what’s next. In this virtual setting, instruction is designed from a trauma-informed perspective to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. The session will be supported by PowerPoint, facilitated group discussion, a digital worksheet for notes during smaller breakout exercises, and coach support in applying and practicing new learning and techniques. All participants will be invited to keep their cameras on and engaged in the chat feature as appropriate. Applying the model to real/current leadership challenges will provide participants with a palpable experience of how the Re/Think framework supports high performing teams in leading transformational change.

How to implement a restorative approach to resolve disciplinary issues
Schools have traditionally opted for a punitive approach when dealing with disciplinary issues or conflict among peers. Is this always the best way? A punishment is applied, but what happens to the relationships and the harm done? When are relationships repaired, if at all? This session provides educators with an overview of useful application of restorative practices in schools, from the more informal impromptu conference, to a group circle/meeting. Participants can expect a session where they will: Learn how to hold an impromptu restorative meeting to resolve minor conflicts among students and/or teachers. Learn the basic planning structure for a restorative circle Apply the planning process for a restorative circle according to hypothetical scenarios.

Evaluating your curriculum for cultural responsiveness
In this session, participants will learn about the components of culture and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. They will complete a self-audit of their curriculum to determine its level of cultural responsiveness for the students they serve. They will then create a plan for learning about the different levels of their students' Funds of Knowledge and integrating these into their instruction. Utilizing different tools, participants will have the opportunity to develop a critical lens with which they can examine their curriculum and instruction for cultural inclusion that goes beyond “heroes and holidays”.

LGBTQ+ inclusion is a child protection measure
Schools have upped their child protection measures in recent years, understanding the value of protocol and policy to safeguard student wellbeing and security. LGBTQ+ children, however, amongst the most vulnerable students in our care, are often still excluded from relevant child protection considerations, posing risks not only for students, but also for involved faculty and the school as an institution. This session delves into current issues around LGBTQ+ child protection in schools, answering pressing questions through a lens of research-backed interventions and developmental models. Educators from all divisions, with any level of experience, and across cultural/geographic contexts, are welcome to build up their knowledge and skills around LGBTQ+ child protection.

Taking steps to be an anti-racist institution
The Miss Porter’s School Board established anti-racist goals for the 2020-21 academic year. We confronted the rise of systemic racism by working collaboratively to execute anti-racist goals. We surveyed key business partners and our largest endowment managers to understand their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our outreach made our commitment to becoming anti-racist clear and sparked insightful conversations. Becoming an anti-racist institution requires the full commitment of school leadership and taking the first step is extremely challenging. We hope to inspire others to move forward as anti-racist institutions by giving them tools and confidence to take the first step.

Transforming our schools through democratic participation
For many systems, the Covid-19 pandemic brought schools and families closer than ever in service of student learning. Throughout the pandemic, leaders and educators recognized and acted on the imperative to foster democratic and academic partnership with families to ensure that each student experienced learning tailored to their strengths, interests, and needs. Now is a chance to continue to rethink long-held assumptions, redesign systems, redefine students’, families’, and communities’ role in public schooling, and recruit all innovations—big and small, pandemic-driven or not—to the task of helping all kids and communities learn and flourish. Join Columbia University’s Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL) for an informative, ideation session on the future of democratic participation in schools. In this session, participants will learn about findings informed by over 500 conversations with educators, administrators, families, and students and identify a few new actionable ideas to strengthen academic partnerships in participants’ own communities.

The Challenge and Power of Youth Devised Work
My goal for the 2021 NEASC Annual Conference is to present a portion of the Darrow on the Fringe youth devising process and how through this process, we can explore current and emerging challenges in our communities and the world around us. The creative process is a huge What if the students decide? Through showing the initial activities that the students and I used to arrive at our final performance, I will illuminate how the work, of students as actors, directors, and producers, helps push and expand new visions of the world and its constantly changing political and environmental landscape. This is an interactive workshop. Participants will experience an overview of the tools we use and have the chance to participate in a rehearsal kick off writing prompts. The workshop plan and additional informational handout will be shared for all of those interested so that these workshop tools can be taken back and adapted to fit individual education communities.

Assess what matters: New metrics for new goals
What if we could truly identify and assess the most important elements of our mission? What if we could point to evidence and data of achievement of all of our learning goals, both traditional academic goals and mission-critical goals that have eluded us for so long?

In this workshop, we will explore a new assessment and feedback model designed to respond to these questions. We will start with the premise that modern competencies and Impacts must become a core part of our assessment design and grading practice as “new” goals (not add-ons) alongside academic goals. We will engage with a framework and metrics to make this happen across all learning goals. The desired result is a model that “flattens” the assessment environment, simplifies the ways in which the learning community addresses competencies and growth, and allows students and parents to connect learning meaningfully, both vertically and horizontally.
